My practice is about landscape, place and the nature of
memory. It explores the idea that we have internal landscapes in our minds and
the relationship we have with the areas we feel a fondness towards. I really
identify with what Michelle Stuart says about our connection with land, that
“…all places are marked on us and we have a map of that place engraved on our
soul.”
The work references Scotland's archaeology and geology, the
questioning of land ownership and is woven with history, memory and cultural
identity.
I use maps and compasses as symbols for locating oneself in
an area, for finding a route, and use words, grids and numbers from maps
removed from their original context as a hidden code. My paintings, prints and
installations are invisible footsteps at points on a journey through the
country. Abstraction allows me to depict memory, feelings, poetry and mystery,
focusing on the most important things about a subject and inviting you to
wander into your own mindscape.
